The concept of modern design can be interpreted in many ways, but in all, it strives to create a lasting form that will withstand generations. Throughout time architecture is not only shaped by the aesthetics of stylistic design but also the emotional impact a building can create. After witnessing the horrors from the First World War people wanted an alternative or a ‘return to order,’ and began to favor architecture that was more charming and organic, promoting the philosophy of harmony between individuals and their homes. Combining with the elements representing that of the international style, which focused more attention on the actual architectural design and aesthetics a building could offer rather than the social characteristics, the Haus Schminke or Schminke House was created in 1933 (Figure 1). In 1930, Hans Scharoun began the design for a house for Fritz Schminke in Là ¶bau, Germany. Schminke wanted a home where his family could live comfortably that was both d ecorative and functionally adequate at the same time. The Schminke House was an advocate of organic architecture as it followed and adapted to the changing ideals of modern design. Hiring an architect to develop and construct a home cost a great deal of money. The patrons wanted their home to be reminiscent of a monument serving as a reflection of their power and wealth. As a result, homes were built with little regard to the people’s need and desires.
